The players who get better fastest aren’t the ones with the most practices. They’re the ones who touch the ball every day. Here are five drills I give every player — all you need is a ball and a bit of grass (or a driveway).
1. Toe Taps — 1 minute
Ball in front of you. Tap the top of it with the sole of one foot, then the other, back and forth, as fast as you can while staying in control. Count how many in 30 seconds and try to beat it tomorrow.
2. Sole Rolls — 2 minutes
Roll the ball across your body with the bottom of your right foot, then stop it with your left and roll it back. This is the move that makes futsal players look like magicians. Keep your head up a little more each time.
3. Inside–Inside — 2 minutes
Pass the ball between the insides of your feet, quick little touches, staying on your toes. Then do it while moving forward, backward and side to side.
4. Wall Passes — 3 minutes
Find a wall (ask first!). Pass it with the inside of your foot, control it, pass again. Right foot for a minute, left foot for a minute, then one-touch for a minute. Your weaker foot will thank you.
5. Cone Weave — 2 minutes
Set out five shoes, cups or cones in a line. Dribble through them using only small touches, then come back using only your left foot. Time it.
The goal: ten minutes, five days a week. In a month you’ll feel the difference on game day. Bring your times to your next lesson and we’ll see how much you’ve improved.
