I played two seasons of indoor futsal with FC Dayton, alongside my year-round outdoor teams. If you’ve never seen it: five players a side, a hard court, a smaller and heavier ball that doesn’t bounce much, and almost no time on the ball.
Why It Makes You Better Outside
- More touches. With fewer players and a small court, you’re involved in nearly every play.
- Faster decisions. There’s a defender on you the second the ball arrives, so you learn to know your next move before your first touch.
- The sole of your foot. Futsal players stop, roll and drag the ball with their soles all the time. Bring that outside and you can turn away from pressure in a tight spot.
- Both feet. On a small court you can’t always shift the ball to your strong side.
Try This at Home
Mark out a small square — four steps by four steps. Dribble inside it for one minute without letting the ball leave the square, using only the soles and insides of your feet. Then make the square smaller.
A lot of the footwork we work on in lessons comes straight from futsal. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it shows up in outdoor games right away.
